How can we do better – improving our practice when sharing difficult and sensitive content within the museum sector

Join us with equality, diversity and inclusion specialists Inclusive Boards to hear about and discuss steps that MDY are taking to provide a safer and more inclusive environment for professional development, for people in the museum sector.

As museums work towards improving their interpretation of diverse histories, we need to be aware of how and if we share some sensitive material, including historic racist objects and images from our collections. How can we improve the ways that we talk within the sector, as well as with audiences, about content that may cause a powerful emotional response?

In this session, we’ll talk about learning from mistakes, improving our awareness of potentially triggering content, and what that means for providing a safe workplace environment.

This session will be useful for you to understand MDY’s own developing practice and to explore how this may apply in your museum’s own work.

This session will discuss triggering caused by racist content and other issues.

Insightful, interactive and informal, come along to gain new insights from our guests, meet colleagues from the region, and connect with the MDY team. Everyone who works and volunteers in museums in our region is most welcome, including museum freelancers who want to stay connected during this time.
