Collections Review and Rationalisation

What will be covered?

Collections rationalisation and review enables a museum to improve its understanding of a collection so that the collection can be used more effectively. This session will explore the benefits of collection reviews and rationalisation, to both the museum and visitors. The session will also introduce different methodologies and frameworks, and approaches to planning a collections review. We will also look at the ethical and legal considerations of deaccession and disposal, as a potential outcome of rationalisation.

Delegates will be encouraged to participate through discussions and activities, and there will be plenty of opportunity for questions throughout.

Sarah Brown, Collections Trust, will also introduce the new Collections Review procedure from the recently updated Spectrum standard, Spectrum 5.0.

This session is being run in partnership between Museum Development Yorkshire and the Collections Trust. The Collections Trust offer free training and advice through their ACE-funded outreach programme, working closely with the museum development network.

The session will be led by Sarah Brown. Sarah is the face of Collections Trust around the country, and works closely with the museum development network across the English regions to deliver free, ACE-funded events on a range of collections management topics. Sarah is the person to contact with your collection management queries.
