Collections Essentials: Life and Death of a Museum Object

MDY Logo

Join us for the first in a new series of MDY Collections Essentials sessions.

Collections Essentials is aimed at people who are new to volunteering or working in museums, or those who would like to increase their understanding of the principles, values and ethics which underpin professional museum practice. It is particularly suited to people from museums without a museum professional in their team, or those who have not yet undertaken museum professional training. Museum trustees are welcome to join to increase their understanding of museum processes. Some Collections Essentials sessions will focus on museum theory, others will focus on practical, basic aspects of collections care.

This session will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams.

Further sessions will be delivered online, or in person where practical learning is involved.

Life & Death of a Museum Object

Learning aims:

  • Introduce the purpose of museum collections documentation
  • Explain the theory and philosophy underpinning the life cycle of a museum object from entry to disposal
  • Walk through the process from object entry and acquisition to potential deaccession from the collection and disposal

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand why we undertake museum collections documentation to agreed professional standards
  • Understand the special status and potential life cycle of a museum object from entering to leaving a museum collection
  • Be aware of the collections documentation processes that are used to manage the different stages of the museum object life cycle

Everyone is welcome to join this session, whether as a single representative of your museum, or as a small group of people from the same museum looking to increase their knowledge.

Please note that this session will not go into detail on the relevant collections documentation processes (Spectrum 5.0). Please see our sessions delivered by Collections Trust for this.
