Art Council Curator Day – The Hepworth Wakefield

Curating the Classroom

The Arts Council Collection are delighted to be working with the Art Fund again this year to develop a series of joint events designed to provide an informal forum for curators from around the country to meet and network.

There are six Curators’ Day events organised every year, each with a special focus, either looking at particular areas of professional practice or visiting important exhibitions with talks from artists, curators and specialists on a range of topics.

Curating the Classroom will investigate a range of innovative approaches to collaborating with schools. In a time of creative crisis in schools, with recent reports of a 16.5% reduction in teaching hours in art and design, we explore the role that galleries can play in bringing art and art practice into the classroom. Guest speakers from across the UK will highlight a range of approaches and perspectives. Members of the Learning team at The Hepworth Wakefield will reflect on their recent contributions to schools’ engagement through their School Prints project, whereby six contemporary artists were commissioned to make a series of auto-lithographs to be gifted to local schools alongside a dedicated engagement offer. Other highlights include insights from Gill Hart, Head of Learning at The National Gallery, London on their hugely successful Take One Picture scheme, and reflections from Laura Woodfield (Art UK) on the charity’s national initiative to take sculpture into schools.

Curating the Classroom provides a friendly and open forum, inviting delegates to contribute their ideas and initiatives through discussion. The day will also include the opportunity to view The Hepworth Sculpture Prize 2018. The Hepworth Wakefield’s curatorial team will provide an informal introduction to the work of the shortlisted artists Michael Dean, Mona Hatoum, Philip Lai, Magali Reus and Cerith Wyn Evans, all of whom are represented in the Arts Council Collection.
