Three tier system from Wednesday 2 December

From Wednesday 2 December, the current national restrictions will end and England will return to a three tier system of coronavirus restrictions. We recommend that you read the Government’s full guidance on the tier system and the COVID-19 Winter Plan.

Tier 1: Medium Alert

  • Museums can remain open, in a COVID secure manner.
  • Face coverings must be worn indoors, except for those who are exempt.
  • The Rule of 6 applies both indoors and outdoors.
  • Museums must close by 11pm.
  • Hospitality venues must provide table service only, in venues which serve alcohol. They must stop taking orders after 10pm and stay closed between 11pm and 5am.

Tier 2: High Alert

  • Museums can remain open, in a COVID secure manner.
  • Face coverings must be worn indoors, except for those who are exempt.
  • Indoors, people can only socialise with their household and support bubble.
  • Outdoors, the Rule of 6 applies.
  • Museums must close by 11pm.
  • Hospitality venues must provide table service only, in venues which serve alcohol. They can only serve alcohol with substantial meals. They must stop taking orders after 10pm and stay closed between 11pm and 5am.

Tier 3: Very High Alert

  • Museums must close.
  • Outdoor sections of museums, galleries, and heritage sites can remain open. Indoor shops, through-ways and public toilets at such attractions can also remain open.
  • In most outdoor venues people can only socialise with their household and support bubble. However, the Rule of 6 applies in the grounds of a heritage site or castle, public parks and gardens, and countryside accessible to the public.
  • Hospitality venues must close. They can continue sales through takeaway, click-and-collect, drive-through or delivery services.
